Dan Frei, CPA Related Seminars and Products


Dan Frei is a seasoned business executive with over 23 years of leadership and finance experience across diverse areas. He currently serves as the Business Operations Director at the State of Utah's central technology entity, leading a team of 55 professionals focused on achieving key results.

His previous state career includes 18 years as the IT Finance Director proceeded by stops in Governor's Office with Governor Walker and Governor Huntsman and the Workforce Services Unemployment Insurance Division. 

Dan is recognized for his financial acumen, project leadership, and ability to foster diverse team collaboration. Colleagues say he is a progressive, driven, and is able to deliver on time and under budget; all while breaking the boring CPA label with his sense of humor.

Dan has served as the chair of the Annual Conference Committee, the Business & Industry Council, and is the current president of the UACPA.

Dan, his wife Lisa, and their six children enjoy traveling, skiing, and having fun.

Michael D. Blackburn, J.D., C.P.A., is a shareholder in the Salt Lake City law firm of BLACKBURN & STOLL, LC where his practice focuses on estate planning, tax planning, and issues affecting small business. He is a past chairman of both the Estate Planning Section and the Task Force on Multi-Disciplinary Practice of the Utah State Bar. He is a past President of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants, served five years on the AICPA Council and two years on the Uniform Accountancy Act Task Force for AICPA/NASBA. He currently serves as Chairman of the Utah Board of Accountancy.

Mr. Blackburn has authored two books on estate and financial planning, has drafted several pieces of legislation, and has written numerous published articles and papers on a variety of legal and tax topics. He is a frequent instructor who has taught courses in more than 200 cities spread over 45 states in the last 20 years. He received the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant's Outstanding Instructor Award for in 1989 and again in 1999, was chosen as Utah's Oustanding CPA in 1997, was elected as a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 1993, and was recognized by Best Lawyers in America in 2008. Mr. Blackburn is an adjunct professor at the University of Utah, teaching classes in individual income taxes, partnership taxation, tax strategies, and tax controversy resolution.

He received his B.S. degree in accounting magna cum laude from the University of Utah and his J.D. degree from Stanford University.

Joe is a partner in the Southern California Practice of PwC, focusing on Technology, Entertainment and Media group with 25 years of experience in public accounting.  Joe currently leads some of our largest global entertainment and advertising clients.  He formerly lead some of the same global clients in Japan and more recently lead the PwC Assurance practice in San Diego.  Of the last 25 years with PwC Joe Spent 11 in Salt Lake City, 2 in New York at the national office 7 in Tokyo Japan and the last 5 in Southern California.   Joe is an avid outdoorsman and maintains a home in Utah not just to be close to family but to enjoy all that Utah has to offer.  Outside of PwC Joe is the Vice Chairman of the Snow College Foundation, he sits on the Advisory Board for the School of Accounting at San Diego State University, and also is on the Audit Committee of Community Housing works.   Joe is the father to three amazing kids ages 15, 18 and 21.


Robert Spendlove's Profile

Robert is a Senior Vice President and the Economic and Public Policy Officer for Zions Bank. In this capacity he monitors and reports on economic indicators and public policy developments

for the bank. Founded in 1873, Zions Bank is Utah's oldest financial institution and it operates locations in communities throughout the Intermountain West.

Robert's research interests are primarily in the areas of macroeconomics, demographics, financial markets and public policy. He frequently advises and briefs policymakers, as well as business and civic groups throughout the United States. He is also regularly called on to give expert analysis in the media, through print, radio, and television. He is known for his insightful and understandable approach to explaining economic trends.

Robert also serves in the Utah House of Representatives, where he was elected in 2014. He represents District 49 in the Legislature, covering parts of Sandy and Cottonwood Heights cities. He is the Chair of the Revenue and Taxation Committee and the Vice Chair of the Rules Committee. He also serves on the Public Education Appropriations Committee, and the Health and Human Services Committee.

Robert serves on a number of boards and commissions, including the Utah Economic Council, the Utah International Relations and Trade Commission, and Envision Utah. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for Intermountain Healthcare Salt Lake Valley Hospitals.

His previous experience includes time as the Governor's Deputy Chief of Staff for Federal Relations, the Governor's Chief Economist and the State Demographer, where he served as the Chair of the Governor's Council of Economic Advisers, Chair of the Utah Population Estimates Committee, and President of the Wasatch Front Economic Forum.

Robert received a Master's of Public Administration with an emphasis in economic public policy at the University of Utah, where he is currently an adjunct instructor of public policy.

Robert is married and the father of four children.

Leah is the CEO and Founder of Workman Forensics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Leah is a licensed Private Investigator in Oklahoma and a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Oklahoma and Utah.

While working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Leah discovered an interest and talent for forensic accounting. After leaving the FBI, she served as a senior certified fraud examiner in a Tulsa public accounting firm before leaving to open Workman Forensics in 2010. 

With over 18 years of experience and a track record of more than 350 cases, Leah has refined her expertise to develop the Data Sleuth® Process-a scalable, data-driven approach to forensic accounting and fraud investigations. She holds an undergraduate degree in accounting from Oral Roberts University and an MBA from Oklahoma State University.

Hon. David M. Walker is a nationally and internationally recognized fiscal responsibility, government transformation/ accountability, and retirement security expert. He is a non-practicing CPA with over 40 years of executive level experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors, including heading three federal agencies (two ERISA agencies), two non-profits, and leading a global service line for Arthur Andersen LLP. His most recent full-time federal position was as the seventh Comptroller General of the United States and CEO of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) for almost 10 years. Most recently, Hon. David M. Walker served as the Distinguished Visiting Professor and Crowe Chair at the U.S. Naval Academy where he taught the Economics of National Security.
